Experience the power of the Holy Spirit through Radical
Obedience
The key to a dynamic Christian life is the power from the
Holy Spirit. The Book of Acts described the first century Christians as so
contagious amidst persecution and suffering because they were filled with the
Holy Spirit. For them, the fullness of the Holy Spirit was a way of life.
The Christian life is not difficult. It is impossible to be
lived – without the Holy Spirit. The truth is, we need God’s Spirit in order
for our lives to be contagious.
Who is the Holy
Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God. He is the third person of the
Tri-unity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is One
God, manifested in three persons. They are distinct but they are One.
“Hear, O Israel, The
LORD is our God, the LORD is one [echad]!” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
God is described here as One – a compound unity (echad), not
a numeric one (yachid). It is the same way the husband and wife were described
to become one flesh in Genesis 2:24. This is difficult to comprehend because
our finite mind will never fully grasp the Infinite. As someone once said, if
we try to understand the Tri-unity, we will lose our mind; but if we try to
deny it, we will lose our soul.
The Holy Spirit is a Person. He speaks to us and directs us
(Acts 8:29, 10:19, 13:2) but we usually cannot hear Him because our lives are
full of noise and distraction. He can also be grieved when we disobey God’s
word (Ephesians 4:30).
The Holy Spirit is the seal of a true Christian (Ephesians
1:13-14). He is the mark of God’s ownership in us. He is our security. He
transforms us into Christ-likeness and empowers us to do God’s will.
How can we experience
the power of the Holy Spirit?
Whatever fills us controls us. When we are filled with the
Holy Spirit, we are controlled by the Holy Spirit. Thus, we are able to do what
we don’t normally do. We are able to obey God’s word regardless of our
feelings, weaknesses, and circumstances.
God’s command will not always make sense to us. But in order
to experience God’s power, we need to obey Him first (Read the story of Gideon
in Judges 7). Just like Gideon, the moment you move out of your comfort zone
and take a step of faith, the power of the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and
the impossible will become possible.
The Christian life is not about what you do for God but what
you allow Him to do in and through your life. The question is: Is the Holy
Spirit in full control of your life? If not, what is preventing Him from
manifesting His power in your life? What is keeping you from surrendering all
to Him?
